News 2006: BTCC

14th May

In 2006, Motorbase Performance has become one of the teams contesting the most prestigious race championship in Britain, the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.

David Pinkney is racing one of the ex-Team Dynamics Honda Integras and has gone up against the works teams from Vauxhall and SEAT and the well-funded WSR team running MGs and Team Dynamics.

The season started at Brands Hatch on 8/9 April, when Pinkney qualified 11th fastest and claimed two top ten finishes during the three races on Sunday, including an eighth place in the third race covered live on ITV1.

From Brands, the action switched to the Mondello Park circuit near Dublin in Ireland, where an unusually dry weekend produce plenty of dramatic race action. Pinkney was in fine form in the Motorbase Honda and qualified tenth before scoring a mighty fourth overall in the second race. Pinkney ran right with the works cars and battled with the works Vauxhall Astras of Fabrizio Giovanardi, Tom Chilton and Gavin Smith. When the flag fell, he was fourth behind Matt Neal, Jason Plato and Colin Turkington, having seen off the challenge of Gavin Smith.

Then came Oulton Park in Cheshire, one of the most challenging tracks on the schedule. David qualified strongly in ninth place and took a tenth and an eighth place finish before retiring from the third race.

So, after the first nine races on the 30-race schedule, Pinkney and the Motorbase team had reason to be pleased with progress having shown the pace to run with, and beat, the big-budget works cars in the BTCC.
