Airwaves BMW Raring to go to Rockingham

Airwaves BMW

September 16th 2009

HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship
Rockingham (Rounds 25/26/27)
Event Preview

In 2008 the fledgling BTCC outfit, then competing under the Motorbase banner, was battling to establish itself in the UK's premier motor racing series when it visited the Northamptonshire track early in the season.

Rob CollardHowever, a year on the Kent-based team will go to the high-speed 1.9 mile circuit with wins and a string of podiums under its belt and looking forward to fighting with the established names for more silverware.

It is a measure of the progress that the team has made in recent months that, despite both of its BMW 320sis taking top-ten finishes in all three races of the championship's previous round at Silverstone, no-one in the Airwaves squad will be content to sit back and relax as the 2009 season enters its final stages.

In fact, both of its drivers are gunning for more glory in the remaining two race meetings at Rockingham and Brands Hatch.

Rob Collard came within a car-length of snatching an outstanding triumph in the third outing of the day at Silverstone after a race-long duel with eventual winner Mat Jackson.  The experienced Hampshireman has driven tenaciously all season, and with the team's qualifying performances having improved steadily all year Collard knows that he now has a realistic shot at the podium more often than not.  With two wins to his name in 2009 he is determined to add to that tally after narrowly missing out on his third victory in the previous round.

Jonny Adam will also be looking to add to his achievements in his 'rookie' BTCC season.  The young Scot has already tasted champagne on the podium twice in 2009, but is keen to do so again and improve his chances of finishing in the top eight of the championship standings.  The 25-year-old BRDC Superstar scheme member has brought a remarkably calm and composed approach to going head-to-head with some of the biggest names in UK racing, and has refused to be chewed up and spat out despite giving away more than ten years of experience to some of his rivals.  Adding a win to his CV will be the Scot's number one target in the remainder of the season.

Airwaves BMW Raring to go to RockinghamAirwaves BMW Team Principal David Bartrum said:
"I'm certainly looking forward to going to Rockingham as we had a very good test there during the summer.  Hopefully we can take what we learned from that day and use it to continue our resurgence.  At the last round at Silverstone we were on it in qualifying and it got good points from both drivers in all three races.  Now we have to make sure we try and improve again, and get some more top results at Rockingham and Brands Hatch so we can go into the winter with a nice positive feeling about next season."

Airwaves BMW Team driver Rob Collard said:
"I am really focused on the last two rounds at Rockingham and Brands Hatch.  I set myself the target before the season of getting the team's first win and collecting at least half-a-dozen podiums.  I've already got a couple of wins and I'm half way to the podium total, so I want to beat that target in the remaining races.  If we can qualify in the top six like we did at Silverstone I'd be delighted.  I expect the Chevys to be really quick again, but we have proved we can lead races and take the fight to them so we just have to find a way to produce that pace consistently across the weekend.  We have been back on form and some people ahead of me in the championship have been struggling, so it's all to play for in terms of the final standings and I want to finish as high up the table as possible."

Airwaves BMW Team driver Jonny Adam said:
"I went really well in testing at Rockingham during the off season so I'm going there with a lot of confidence.  The layout at Rockingham should suit the BMW 320si more than the last round at Silverstone.  It's quite a technical circuit and it's a real challenge, so we need to be right up there in qualifying to give ourselves a real chance.  I've consistently managed to score good points in the last few rounds, which is great, but now I want to be another two or three places higher and get back on the podium again.  I can still move up a couple of spots in the overall championship standings with a good weekend of results so I won't be easing off in any way towards the end of the season."
