Airwaves BMW Savouring Silverstone Spectacular

Airwaves BMW

August 25th 2009

HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship
Siverstone (Rounds 22/23/24)
Event Preview

Airwaves BMW drivers Rob Collard and Jonny Adam can't wait to get stuck in when the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship arrives at Silverstone this weekend.

The previous round at Knockhill treated motorsport fans to three classic touring car races, and the famous Northamptonshire track looks set to once again serve up some of the best racing seen in the UK for many years.

The competitiveness of the BTCC field has been evident throughout the 2009 season, and with former F1 star Johnny Herbert and touring car legend Anthony Reid joining the grid at Silverstone the action is about to get even more intense.

However, the Airwaves BMW drivers are looking forward to putting themselves centre stage and showing they are among the star turns in the championship's current line-up.

Both drivers were right on the money in qualifying at Knockhill, with Adam placing himself third on the grid and Collard just behind his team-mate in fifth.

While both suffered setbacks in the races, culminating in a bitterly disappointing double-DNF in the final outing of the day, neither man is suffering any hangover from events in Scotland.

The duo are determined to bounce back in style at Silverstone and show the kind of form that saw them regularly standing on the podium in the first half of the season.

A strong haul of points could move both drivers quickly up the championship order in a season where no driver is dominating the pack, while Airwaves BMW can still take third in the overall BTCC teams' standings and second in the independents' championship.

Airwaves BMW Team Principal David Bartrum said:
"This season just gets better and better.  At Silverstone we're going to have two more big-name stars joining the field in the shape of Johnny Herbert and Anthony Reid, which should make for an exciting challenge.  When you look at the drivers and teams involved the BTCC really is the place to be right now and it is serving up some of the most exciting entertainment you will see anywhere.  At Airwaves BMW we're happy to be right in the thick of that, and while we may no longer be in contention for the title we still have the ability to be right up there fighting for wins and spoiling everyone else's party, so we will be going absolutely flat out.  The remaining three rounds in the season run-in are all at great tracks that we enjoy racing at, so we are really looking forward to ending the season on a high."

Airwaves BMW Team driver Rob Collard said:
"We want to put ourselves back on the map at Silverstone.  It was very frustrating at Knockhill to have done so well in Saturday qualifying but then have things taken out of our hands during the races on Sunday due to a number of plain unfortunate incidents.  We had the pace but we were always on the back foot it seemed.  However, Silverstone is a different proposition and should suit us and the BMW 320si.  I want to be back on the podium trail again and try and break back into the top five in the championship standings.  If Jonny and I can qualify top six we will give ourselves a great chance of pulling off some big results on Sunday.  I'm also really looking forward to going up against Johnny Herbert and Anthony Reid.  I've not raced against Anthony for years and it will be good to be back on track with him, especially as we are both in BMWs."

Airwaves BMW Team driver Jonny Adam said:
"After my home event at Knockhill this is another big event for me at Silverstone.  I have had a really good record here in other championships like the Clios and SEATs, so it holds nothing but good memories for me.  I'm also a member of the BRDC Superstars driver development scheme, which has helped my career immensely, so it's important I perform well at the club's home race.  I've got a feeling the Chevrolets are going to be in their element at Silverstone due to the circuit layout, but our BMWs should be quick there too.  Qualifying again like we did at Knockhill would be ideal, and if we can do that then hopefully this time we can convert that pace into solid results in the races on Sunday.  There's going to be another Scotsman racing a BMW at Silverstone this weekend which is great, but I want to make sure I've proved I'm the fastest one come the end of the three races."
