Awesome Adam Seals Special Second Row Start

Airwaves BMW

August 15th 2009

HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship
Knockhil, Rounds 19/20/21

Qualifying Update

Airwaves BMW's Jonny Adam produced his best-ever qualifying performance in the HiQ MSA Touring Car Championship as he grabbed an impressive third place on the grid in qualifying for his home round at Knockhill.

Awesome Adam Seals Special Second Row StartThe local hero, proudly driving with the Saltire emblazoned on the roof of his BMW 320si, delighted the Scottish fans by finishing the session as the leading BMW driver - only a tenth of a second behind pole-sitter Jason Plato.

Adam shares the second row with BTCC championship leader Colin Turkington, and will be looking to attack former champion Plato and fellow Scot Gordon Shedden when race one begins tomorrow (Sunday).

Airwaves BMW's Rob Collard rounded off the team's superb qualifying performance by placing fifth, just one row behind team-mate Adam, and is in an excellent position to gain ground during tomorrow's race.

The Hampshireman, fully recovered from his heavy shunt in the last round of the BTCC at Snetterton earlier this month, timed his final qualifying lap perfectly to snatch his spot on the third row.

The highly competitive nature of the BTCC was again underlined in the qualifying session as less than one second separated the leading 14 drivers in the 17-car field.

Seven hours of live action-packed HiQ MSA Touring Car Championship coverage from Knockhill will be show on ITV4 between 11am and 6pm.

Airwaves BMW Team Principal David Bartrum said:
"I'm over the moon with that session.  It's the best combined placing in terms of where both our cars are, so obviously we're pleased with that.  It's great for Jonny to be starting from the second row in his home race, and it gives him a real shot at going out there and challenging for a win in the first race.  Rob is right behind him too so there's no reason they can't both look for a podium finish.  The team in the garage have worked very hard over the past few weeks to make sure our cars are in the best possible shape for this round, and they have got their reward with those strong qualifying positions.  Being up there at the front will hopefully give us the chance to go for podiums in all three races.  Now we've got to get our heads down tomorrow and capitalise on it tomorrow."

Airwaves BMW Team driver Rob Collard said:
"I'm pretty pleased with that session.  My aim coming here was to make sure I qualified in the top six so to get fifth was right on the mark.  The car was very good and the boys have done a sterling job to put it back together and get it working so well after it was so badly damaged at Snetterton.  It was so close out there and I think both Jonny and I have done well to put ourselves right in the mix for a win in the first race if it all goes to plan.  I'm really looking forward to the first race now and if we get a good start there's no reason Jonny and I can't be right up there."

Airwaves BMW Team driver Jonny Adam said:
"It's great to be right up there in the top three with Jason Plato and Gordon Shedden.  I had a small off into the gravel early in the session but managed to recover and get quicker and quicker as the session went on.  It's nice to have two Scots in with a great shout of going for a win tomorrow.  Qualifying as the fastest BMW driver is also a big boost.  I'll be looking to attack the guys in front but it will be really tough as they are both so experienced and know their way around Knockhill.  I've put myself in a good position to do something special in front of my home fans though I will be giving it one hundred percent all the way."
