Croft Qualifying Conundrum for Airwaves BMW

Airwaves BMW

June 13th 2009

HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship
Croft, Rounds 13/14/15
June 13, 2009
Update After Qualifying

Rob Collard led the way for Airwaves BMW in qualifying for the HiQ MSA Touring Car Championship at Croft.

Rob Collard Qualifying at CroftIn an incredibly competitive session that saw less than one second separating the top 15 drivers on the grid, Collard secured tenth spot for the Kent-based squad.

Jonny Adam slotted in just behind his Airwaves BMW team-mate in 11th, with only two thousandths of a second separating the two.

The qualifying session at the North Yorkshire track took place in bright, sunny conditions - but a number of top competitors appeared to struggle to find their pace and finished further down the qualifying order than expected.

The Airwaves BMW pair of Collard and Adam will be targeting Matt Neal and James Thompson when the lights go green for the first race on Sunday.  The former BTCC champions will start just ahead of the Airwaves BMW duo, who will be determined to make the powerful acceleration of the BMW 320si count off the line and put themselves in the hunt for a top five finish.

All three HiQ MSA Touring Car Championship races from Croft will be shown live on ITV4 between 11.45am-6.00pm on Sunday, June 14.

Airwaves BMW Team Principal David Bartrum said:
"We just made it into the top ten which is fine, but it's not quite where we wanted to be.  It's incredibly competitive out there when you look at how narrow the gap is between pole and the rest of the cars in the top half of the field.  Today some of our rivals seem to have a slight edge on us, but as always we will work hard to make sure we're on the pace come the first race.  Both Rob and Jonny have been driving really well over the last few rounds and I'm sure they will be quick off the mark again tomorrow."

Airwaves BMW Team driver Rob Collard said:
"I'm a little bit frustrated to have qualified in tenth.  The car felt quite strong but we are further away from the front than we thought we would be.  I was struggling a bit in the braking zones so that's something we will have to work hard to iron out.  I'm confident the boys in the garage will deliver a very good setup for the races though, and we will be able to challenge for strong finishes."

Airwaves BMW Team driver Jonny Adam said:
"I feel a little bit disappointed for the team after that session because we've been pretty quick in qualifying over the past few rounds.  We thought we would be a lot closer to the other BMWs but we obviously have a bit of work to do.  However, when you look at the times it's really close between the top half of the grid, and as always we'll go out and have a real go when the first race starts."
