Ollie Jackson - Carrera Cup mid-term review

July 10th 2009

Ollie JacksonIt's been a big season so far for Ollie Jackson, who has stepped up to the Porsche Carrera Cup GB with Motorbase Performance. The jump up from Caterham racing is a massive challenge, but Ollie has made fine progress and now has his sights set firmly on a first pro-am1 victory during the second half of the season.

David Bartrum, Ollie JacksonLike any racing driver, Ollie wants to make rapid progress, but he knows that the Carrera Cup is his biggest challenge to date. "Considering where I've come from and given the fact that I'm still learning the car, I'm pretty happy," said Ollie at the start of the mid-season break. "I'd have liked to be winning pro-am1 by now, but it's a tough season and there is a lot of competition."

What is certain, is that weekend by weekend his pace and experience is growing and two third places at Oulton Park were quickly followed by two seconds at Croft, one in the dry and one on a very wet track.

Ollie Jackson"Even if the results don't always reflect it, I feel that every weekend I'm getting more comfortable in the car and at Oulton Park I was starting to race it properly. It was more like I was driving the car, rather than the car was driving me. I wasn't expecting to do as well as I did at Oulton, so that was an encouraging weekend," said Ollie.

Ollie JacksonWhatever the results, it is clear that Jackson is enjoying the challenge of driving the 420bhp, 170mph Porsches. "I'm very much enjoying it. It can be tough and intense, but it is so rewarding and such a fantastic experience. The cars, the whole Porsche set-up and the team are brilliant and you can't fail to enjoy yourself."

Ollie JacksonCurrently, the teams and drivers are taking a well-earned mid-season break before the action resumes at Snetterton over the first weekend of August. In that time Ollie will have moved house and is likely to be living close to the Norfolk track. He's already thinking about his personal goals for the second half of the season. "Over the second half of the season I want to move up a bit more and I'd like to improve my qualifying pace. I think my race craft is okay because I've come from Caterhams, but the outright speed is definitely something I want to work on.

"I think Robert Lawson is currently the quickest in pro-am1. Although he's in the pro category, I see my benchmark as Lewis Hopkins. He came out of Caterhams as well and I've been chatting with him recently. We seem to be encountering the same driving style issues and our racing careers are similar to date."

Supporting Ollie's race programme is his father Paul, and he's enjoying being an integral part of the Motorbase team at race weekends. "He's stepped up every weekend so far and he's done a great job considering he's done relatively little racing," said Jackson senior of Jackson junior. "I love the racing; it's a fantastic thing for us to do as a family."

In fact, that family atmosphere extends right across the Motorbase team. "There is a great atmosphere at Motorbase," said Ollie. "David does a fantastic job and the all the guys are great and Patrick is always creative with the set-up. The Carrera Cup is a challenge, but it's a rewarding challenge."
