News 2010: Charles Bateman Mid-season Review

July 15th

Charles BatemanThe newest recruit to the Motorbase Performance team in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB is Charles Bateman and he's chalked up some impressive results over the first half of the season. If he can up his qualifying game, Charles will be heading for the overall podium over the second half of the season.

"This year we've had some really good races, but it's all down to qualifying," admits the Boston-based driver. "We seem to be struggling quite heavily in qualifying to get the ultimate pace out of the tyres. We're trying to work on that because if we have a decent qualifying I know we'll have some podium finishes and hopefully a win."

There is no doubting Charlie's race pace. In the first race at Oulton Park he had a lot of overtaking to do to finish fifth and in the second race he set overall fastest lap, but overcooked it and had a spin.

"The whole year is going well in terms of race finishes; it's just about qualifying," he said. "If we nail qualifying, we'll be on the back of Harvey. I can race well; we've got the race package sorted out. Motorbase has provided me with a brilliant race car, we just need to get the qualifying right. I have struggled with getting a clear lap with the big grids this year, but everyone has the same problem. I think it is a little bit the tyres, a little bit me and a little bit the car."

Now comes the second half of the season and some tracks that suit him well. Bateman has always been quick at Snetterton and Knockhill is a real favourite. "I'm looking forward to Knockhill, that's my favourite circuit and I think if we can get qualifying sorted there, we will fly."

What is clear is that he is enjoying life at Motorbase Performance. "It's a different atmosphere at Motorbase. The team is very professional, David Bartrum is great and my mechanic Ash is brilliant. It's like a big family, really. The only thing I have to put up with is Michael Caine. It's a shame he's there, but he's due to retire soon as he's getting quite old and his hearing and eyesight are going quite badly."
