News 2010: George Richardson Mid-season Review

July 15th

George RichardsonAfter five weekends in the 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup GB, teenager George Richardson is really finding his feet with the Motorbase Performance squad. A podium finish at Croft and front-running pro-am2 pace suggests that a pro-am2 victory is well within his grasp over the second half of the season.

"It started really well and as I've progressed the time gap gets smaller to the guys at the front, but as you get closer it gets harder the find the time," said the Cheshire racer. "We had a great start to the season, bar the two non-finishes, which were down to inexperience. Two podiums, a third and a second in pro-am2 and fifth in the championship with not too much between me and Steve Parish, who is a great team mate."

However, a bad weekend followed. "Then we hit Oulton Park and my home round, and it all just sort of fell apart. My problems with heel and toe technique were highlighted at Oulton and as I started thinking more and more about it, it got worse.
In the second race at Oulton it was a bit better, but I got stuck behind the second of the Lithuanian drivers and just couldn't get past him. It was my first time in the Porsche at Oulton Park and I'd never really done any testing there, so that was hard."

But with his exams now finished, George is able to concentrate on his racing ahead of the second half of the season. "I was doing my exams through June. They finished on 25 June, so it's been nice and relaxed since then. In the summer break I'm concentrating on my fitness to take it to the next level. I'm working very hard with my trainer, Jonathan at I-Can personal training in Alderley Edge. I want to keep myself as fresh as I can through the break."

George says that the environment at Motorbase is really helping him progress through this learning year. "Chris, my mechanic, is very, very good and so are the engineers Mark and Patrick. Mike is a great team manager; he's got so much experience and all in Porsches," said George. "I've been out with Michael Caine for some driving coaching and it's great to have an asset like him in the team."

Now the focus is on the remaining five weekends of the season, starting at Snetterton on 7/8 August. "I hope to get out in the car during the break and not just go straight to Snetterton. I'd like to do three or four tests because there is more to learn. Then we'll be preparing for 2011 with the new car!"
