News 2010: Griffin Shines at Oulton Park

June 8th

Liam GriffinAt one of the most challenging tracks on the schedule, Liam Griffin had his best weekend to date in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB with the Motorbase Performance squad at Oulton Park (5/6 June).

In what proved to be a very strong weekend for the Addison Lee-backed car, Liam claimed his best Carrera Cup result to date as his pace in the car stepped up a gear. "It's been by far my best weekend of the season to date," he said after the second race of the weekend. "I found time in some places and I found some confidence."

The weekend started well with a strong run in qualifying, which left Liam 15th overall for the opening race from the 27-strong field. Just 1.8s separated him from team mate Michael Caine, who was on pole position. On such a demanding circuit, that 1.8s margin was evidence of just how much progress Liam has made in his first four weekends of Carrera Cup racing.

"We came here testing last week and that was useful," he said. "I also watched the video of last season's Oulton Park races and just decided I had to try harder and be a little bit braver with the car moving about beneath me. So I gave that a go and it seemed to work."

The excellent qualifying pace was repeated in the first race when Liam raced at the head of a five-car pack to maintain his starting position by finishing 15th and taking an overall championship point. In the process, he withstood race-long pressure from Alex Martin and George Brewster.

However, better was to come in the second race at the end of the afternoon when Liam clinched a fine 12th overall and sixth in pro-am1 to score his best result to date. Unfortunately, the race ended early when team mate Steve Parish had a major accident, which slightly took the shine from Liam's excellent weekend.

"I think I've come on a long way this weekend and I'm really pleased with it," he said after the second race. "Unfortunately it ended on a sour note with Steve's accident. I wanted it to be dry for the races and I didn't want another Brands, with dry testing and qualifying and a wet race. I can't wait to get to Croft now; I want to get onto the back of the fast guys in pro-am1. It's been great fun!"
