News 2011: Airwaves Racing look to close Championship gap at Croft

June 15th

Jackson leads race 3 at Oulton Park

Airwaves Racing have set their sights on closing the point's gap at top of the Championship leader board as the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship heads to North Yorkshire circuit Croft this coming weekend 18th and 19th June.

Following an action packed weekend at Oulton Park two weeks ago that saw Airwaves Racing fight their way back from a disastrous start to claim their second win of the season, Mat Jackson's race 3 victory sees him head into round 5 of the BTCC in a strong third place position for the overall title. With only a mere seven points separating Jackson and current leader Matt Neal, this weekend promises to be one to remember as the teams and drivers battle it out to gain the coveted Championship lead ahead of the mid-season break.

Liam Griffin on track at Oulton ParkCroft hasn't given the Airwaves Racing team much cause for celebration in recent seasons and a number of years have passed since Jackson last visited the Croft podium in a rear wheel drive BMW back in 2008. However, the Kent-based team and seasoned professional are hoping that 27kg of success ballast isn't too much of a hindrance, as they aim to build upon on the impressive pace the Mountune-powered Ford Focus ST has shown this season to secure another strong points haul and strengthen their Championship title bid further.

Airwaves Racing team-mate and BTCC rookie, Liam Griffin will be making his front wheel drive debut at the North Yorkshire circuit alongside Jackson, and after an unlucky last outing at Oulton Park, Griffin is eager to put in a consistent performance to work his way up through the BTCC field and produce an improved finish over the weekend.

A quick pit-stop is on the cards for the Airwaves Racing team on Thursday as they call off at their sponsor Leyland Paints' head office in Birstall, West Yorkshire to take part in their staff, friends and family day. As well as providing a welcome light relief before the racing kicks off, hopefully whilst there, the Airwaves team can also pick up some tips on how to add an extra touch of gloss to their weekend's performance and achieve the perfect podium finish!

Round 5 of the BTCC featuring races 13, 14 and 15 take place at Croft Circuit on Sunday 19th June. Live coverage of Sunday's events will be shown on ITV4, and also in HD from 11.30am – 6pm; with featuring live streaming online of Saturday's qualifying session between 3.05 and 3.35pm.

Airwaves Racing Team Manager Oly Collins said:
"We like Croft, it's a fantastic circuit and venue and they always get a great turn out on the day. We're looking forward to taking some of our pace from Oulton Park into this coming weekend and with Mat in a strong position for the title race, we hope to strengthen that even further. It will be yet another learning weekend for Liam; however we're confident that he will progress further in this first weekend of front wheel drive touring car action at the North Yorkshire circuit. The team have worked extremely hard again to turn the cars around from an action packed weekend at Oulton Park and I hope we can repay their efforts with a strong showing.”

Airwaves Racing driver Mat Jackson said:
"On the back of our Oulton Park performance two weeks ago, we are all excited about our trip north to the Croft circuit. For myself,  it is one of the few circuits that I have not achieved an outright win at and am keen to add it to this list sooner rather than later!”

Airwaves Racing driver Liam Griffin said:
"I have only raced at Croft once before but it is a great circuit with a fantastic atmosphere. Before the last round I felt that I was getting to grips with the car and the Championship but the conditions at Oulton really made it quite tough. That said, I do feel on the verge of a bit of a breakthrough and surely some luck must be due to my way! "
