News 2011: Airwaves Racing Looking to Repeat History at Thruxton

April 27th

Airwaves Racing Celebrate Maiden Win at Donington

Airwaves Racing are hoping for a repeat performance of their last outing, which saw Mat Jackson clinch their first race win of the season, as they get set to tackle the fast and furious Thruxton circuit this coming weekend for round 3 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.

Following a challenging weekend at Donington two weeks ago, a blistering drive by Mat Jackson in race 3 saw him claim the 2011 maiden victory for the Airwaves Racing team from 10th position on the grid. An outstanding effort by the team to rebuild Liam Griffin's car following a high speed smash in race 2 was also rewarded with his best result to date of a 9th place finish and his first ever points score in the BTCC.

The Motorbase run-team head to the South West circuit in a strong Championship position with Mat Jackson sitting in third place overall and just five points behind current leader James Nash, and as runner up with four points separating them in the Independents standings. With Airwaves Racing currently positioned in second place in the Independent team standings and in forth place overall, they'll be looking to pick up a good haul of points this coming weekend to fuel their Championship campaign further.

Thruxton holds good memories for the team, as they secured their sensational maiden 1-2 result in the previously run BMW's during the final race of the Championship's 2010 opening round. The Airwaves Racing team have yet to trial the new 'little red devil' Ford Focuses here so all eyes will be on how well the cars perform and cope with tyre wear around the punishing track.

Airwaves Racing Team Principal David Bartrum said:
"Thruxton is a circuit that we always look forward to as a team. It offers up a unique set of challenges that no other track does and a weekend at Thruxton never fails to be interesting, even more so this year with all the recent changes that have taken place within the BTCC. For Airwaves Racing, this weekend is all about scoring those vital points and keeping the team on the right track for the Championship."

Airwaves Racing driver Mat Jackson said:
"Obviously we're going to Thruxton off the back of a great win at Donington Park, so we're confident in the potential of the Ford Focus and have shown that it's capable of winning races. Thruxton will come down to tyre wear as it always does, but we know we have a good chassis that's kinder on the tyres and a great Mountune engine so we'll be looking for a strong result to push our Championship challenge further."

Airwaves Racing driver Liam Griffin said:
"After a very positive finish at Donington, the expectation has gone down a touch for Thruxton. The fact that neither I or the car have run at the circuit this year makes it interesting to say the least and there are varying opinions about how the car will perform. That said, if any team can get the best out of this Focus it is the Airwaves Racing crew so with them behind us and a few bravery pills around the fastest circuit in the country we could do alright!"

Round 3 of the BTCC featuring races 7, 8 and 9 take place at Thruxton on Sunday 1st May. Live coverage of Sunday's events will be shown on ITV4, and also in HD from 11.00am – 6pm, with featuring live streaming online of Saturday's qualifying session between 3.15 and 3.45pm.
