News 2012: Redstone Racing ready to start season with home win

Wrotham-based Redstone Racing will be vying for victory in front of its home crowd in the opening round of the 2012 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) at Brands Hatch this weekend (31 March/1 April 2012), as the team launches its most ambitious title campaign to date.

After narrowly missing out on the 2011 teams' trophy under its previous banner of Airwaves Racing, the Kent squad returns with a new name - after securing title sponsorship from IT and communications services company Redstone – and an expanded line-up of three talented drivers.

Spearheading Redstone Racing's 2012 BTCC challenge is Mat Jackson; one of the highest rated and most successful drivers in this year's championship, who has built up a strong rapport and victory record since joining the team in 2010. Jackson is partnered by his 2011 team-mate Liam Griffin, feeling confident after a learning debut campaign, while the squad also welcomes rapid newcomer, Ireland's Aron Smith.

Although the team has changed name this season, fans will be delighted that its familiar 'little red devil' Ford Focus STs return with a powerful Mountune built turbo engine under the bonnet. All three cars have undergone a winter development at Redstone Racing's headquarters, based on the doorstep of Brands Hatch circuit.

Mat Jackson on trackWith quality driver signings, a strong car and the advantage of local knowledge, Team Principal David Bartrum is confident that Redstone Racing can start the season as they mean to go on: "We're looking forward to our first race weekend as Redstone Racing, especially as it's so close to home. The team and drivers have been extremely busy over the winter developing our little red devils and we were the fastest car at the last round last year, so we hope to be competitive. I just hope that TOCA have got the equalisation right this year so the season is about racing and not politics. All of the teams and drivers in the paddock just want to race fairly and win or lose on merit of the team and drivers' performance over the weekend. We'll see come Sunday afternoon when the green flag drops the talking stops!"

"We've worked really hard on the Ford Focus ST over the winter and we can hit the ground running," added Mat Jackson. "We have a proven package and that puts us in a strong position. Every year we start with the same intentions and that's to win the championship."

"The BTCC looks very well supported again this year," added Liam Griffin. "After a tough start to last year the season finished well and I feel that I have been able to take that confidence into pre-season testing and put in some decent times. There is still a fair way to go to be on the pace of the likes of Mat but I am definitely progressing, which is the important thing."

"Finally Brands Hatch is here!" concluded Aron Smith. "I'm so excited to get out there and hopefully put all the hard work that Redstone Racing has done over the winter to good use. I'm never one to set myself definitive targets but realistically I'm hoping to start of in the top ten and go from there. I think we've shown good pace during testing so hopefully that translates into some good results."
