News 2013: Ahmad Al Harthy - Oman on a mission!

October 2nd

Oman Air Motorbase head into this weekend's British GT season finale as title contenders

Ahmad Al Harthy will bring the curtain down on an incredibly successful first year of GT racing with the Oman Air Motorbase team in the final round of the 2013 Avon Tyres British GT Championship at Donington Park this coming weekend (5/6 October).

With extra points on offer for the two-hour race, Al Harthy and Michael Caine are firmly among the title contenders. This is a remarkable position for the 32-year-old racer from Oman, who only stepped up into GT racing at the start of the season.

"I really can't wait for Donington", said Al Harthy. "It's been a fantastic season and to be going into the last round in contention for the championship is far beyond what we thought might be possible when we set out on this programme at the start of the year. The guys at Oman Air Motorbase have given us a superb car all season so it really would be incredible to reward them with the title."

Ahmad says that the results to date have exceeded his ambitions. As well as two outright race wins, the Motorbase car has finished every race in the points and is the only car in the championship to have achieved this record. The tally says much about the driver line-up and the work by the team.

Ahmad Al Harthy has had a remarkable debut season in the British GT Championship"We know how tough it's going to be, there are so many top teams and drivers in British GT and so many driver pairings capable of winning," said Ahmad. "All year we've had to cope with extra ballast in the car, due to how things are graded in the championship, and we've still managed to do a great job. So I'm confident we can try and fight for another podium at the weekend and, maybe, our third win."

Although very familiar with Donington from his time in the Carrera Cup GB, this weekend will mark Ahmad's first race on the Grand Prix track at the East Midlands venue. "It'll be interesting to race on the Grand Prix track for the first time", he added, "It's only really a couple more corners added on to the National Circuit, so I'm sure I'll be able to get to grips with it very quickly. The aim is to end the season on a high, hopefully we can."

Following free practice sessions during the morning of Saturday 5 October, qualifying for round nine of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship will be at 3.45pm. Sunday's title deciding two-hour race starts at 1.15pm with live coverage on Motors TV.
