News 2013: Second 2013 Victory for Oman Air Motorbase

September 9th

Caine and Al Harthy celebrate second race victory of 2013 at Zandvoort

A superb victory in round eight of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship, backed up by yet another points' finish in round nine made it a fine weekend for the Oman Air Motorbase team at Zandvoort in The Netherlands over the weekend (7/8 September).

Ahmad Al Harthy and Michael Caine took their second victory of the season on Saturday during an unpredictable eighth round of the season. To add to the scale of their achievement, they started the race from pole position thanks to a stunning qualifying run from Ahmad in the Oman Air-backed Porsche 911 GT3R.

"Being on pole for the first time was incredible, it started raining just as I went out in qualifying so we knew we only had a short time to get a good lap. I was delighted with the time I did," said the Omani racing driver.

Oman Air Motorbase overcome massive weight penalty to take second 2013 race win Ahmad made a great start from the rolling start and immediately pulled away at the front. Unfortunately, the safety car was soon out to negate his advantage and the pit-stop window was about to open when racing finally resumed. Caine took over and had to deal with fierce opposition on his way to a mighty victory.

"At the start, I got away really well and had to push very hard straight away to try and build a gap: we knew it was our chance if we managed that. I couldn't believe it when the safety car came out though," said Ahmad. "The team did a fantastic job with the car. It was perfect in the race and ran faultlessly all the way through. The guys did a great job in the pit-stop too and Michael had a mega stint. We're absolutely over the moon to have taken our second win in British GT."

Round nine of the championship later on Sunday was always going to be tough as Caine started the Oman Air Motorbase car from 21st place on the grid after a difficult run in qualifying. However, Caine was instantly on the attack in the hour-long race and battled through to 11th place before his pit-stop on lap 15. A further 15-second pit-stop penalty due to their earlier win left Ahmad with a lot to do as he rejoined the race in 19th place.

However, with another big attack and a little good fortune, Ahmad was up to ninth place at the flag to maintain their 100% points' scoring record and put the Motorbase car fourth in the points ahead of the season finale at Donington Park (5/6 October). After the weekend's successes, the Oman Air Motorbase squad are now
just 10 points behind the championship leaders with everything still to play for.
