News 2013: Silverstone next for Oman Air Motorbase

May 21st

Frustrating weekend for Griffin

Round four of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship will be one of the biggest challenges of the season for the Oman Air Motorbase team when the squad tackles a three-hour race on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit this coming weekend (25/26 May).

After a strong run in round three at Rockingham, a two-hour race at the start of May, the team's Porsche 911 GT3R will now contest a three-hour race with Ahmad Al Harthy and Michael Caine once more at the wheel. Apart from the challenge of the longer race, the team also has to contend with one of the best entries ever seen in British GT as several top GT teams from Europe join the already very strong field.

However, the Motorbase car is still carrying a major penalty due to the championship organiser's grading of the two drivers and having to carry 75kg of ballast is clearly hurting the pace of the Oman Air-backed car.

Team boss Bartrum unhappy with additional ballast penalty"The weight penalty we have to carry does not fit the crime and it is too much weight on the car," said team boss David Bartrum. "There is no right of appeal to the weight and there is no structure to the decision. It's just an opinion and a number and there is no scientific basis to it. I really do love the GT racing and so that's the difficult bit for me."

Despite the obvious handicap against the strongest field in the history of the British GT Championship, everyone in the team is determined to give 110% at Silverstone in pursuit of another strong result. The size of the grid and the three-hour format may throw up some surprises and give the Motorbase team the chance for some smart thinking over race strategy.

"It was a sterling effort from team Oman Air Motorbase at Rockingham and I'm very much looking forward to the next race at Silverstone," said Bartrum.

Following a pair of one-hour free practice sessions on Saturday 25 May, qualifying for the fourth round of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship will take place at 16.50. The three-hour race starts at 13.00 on Sunday 26 May.
