Already one of the most successful drivers in the long history of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship, after only six seasons at the pinnacle of UK motorsport, reigning and three-time champion Ash Sutton takes on a new challenge this year with Motorbase-run NAPA Racing.
Returning to front-wheel drive competition for the first time since 2016, the 28-year-old from Bishop’s Stortford aims to battle for his third straight BTCC crown and fourth overall as part of the NAPA Racing entered ‘dream team’ alongside Dan Cammish.
Debuting in car racing in Formula Ford back in 2014, finishing third in the championship, he moved into ‘tin top’ action the following year in the Renault UK Clio Cup. Sensationally winning the coveted title at his first attempt, the victory also earned him a spot in the Goodyear/Dunlop Prize Test in a Motorbase Ford Focus BTCC car.
Graduating into touring cars in 2016, he became a race winner in his maiden campaign and then starred in 2017 in a Subaru Levorg to impressively lift his first BTCC title – the youngest driver since 1966 to do so. Over the next two years Ash continued to win numerous races, before adding his second BTCC crown in 2020 as well as the Independents Trophy in an Infiniti Q50.
During the final race of last season’s BTCC, Ash made it back-to-back overall titles with the Infiniti and wrapped-up a career hat-trick of championship victories in touring cars – becoming one of the true BTCC greats so early in his touring car career.
